The chemist Joseph Priestly published a scientific paper on the production of soda water and was awarded a medal by the Royal Society in London for this work (1773).* Soda water became an essential ingredient of the so called Collins Family, a type of strongly alcoholized carbonated fruit drinks.
According to statistics published this day, whereas in 1939 75% of liquor was sold in bars and pubs and only 25 % was consumed at home, in 1965 the proportions were reversed; customers consumed 65 % of liquor at home (1995).

George Sexton obtained the distilling license for the Leinster province for 5 Irish shillings (1608).

The Moravian margrave Jošt granted the city council of Brno the right to own a tavern and to serve Italian, some Austrian and Hungarian wines there from St. Michael’s day, i.e. September 29th to St. George’s day, April 24th (1393).

In the saloon of its establishment on St. James street, Francis Berry, one of the business partners of Berry Bros. and Rudd introduced an utterly new blended Scots whisky, which the attending painter James McBey named after the famous merchant clipper Cutty Sark (1923).

The Norman St. Evremond, one of the three founding members of the Ordre des Coteaux, a gourmet order, paid 34 shillings, 8 pence for champagne, two dozen bottles with corks (1665). * In the 17th century the champagne, bottles and plugs were each charged separately.

In appreciation of his services to the kingdom, king Louis XIV of France conferred a coat-of-arms upon Pierre Lapostolle, whose name has been associated with the Grand Marnier liquor since the 19th century (1698).
